Please join us for the launch of Practice Makes Perfect by Rosa-Johan Uddoh, co-published by Book Works and Focal Point Gallery as part of our Co-Series, in association with the Bluecoat, and The Bower. Comprising of new writing and work relating to Uddoh’s art practice, and especially the 2021 exhibition at Focal Point Gallery,
Practice Makes Perfect focuses on themes of radical self-love, inspired by black feminist practice and writing. The book comprises a collection of experimental writing for performance, each aiming to trouble how a particular character in popular culture performs (and produces) Black British identity. Including scripts, lyric sheets, stories and stickers, the reader is encouraged to insert their own experiences and interpretations, in their head or through live performances of their own.
The Bower will re-open Uddoh’s recent exhibition ‘Una’s Voice’ for the evening of the book launch, a second chance to experience the sound piece which draws upon the life and work of Una Marson, a British/Jamaican activist, radio producer, presenter, and poet.
Practice Makes Perfect is also available to preorder now.
