Master Rock is ten years old!
Written and directed by Maria Fusco, Master Rock was a originally commissioned by Artangel and BBC Radio 4, as an experimental radio play, performed inside and broadcast from Ben Cruachan on the west coast of Scotland. A repertoire for a mountain, the work fuses landscape, labour and myth through the documentary and the lyrical to tell the story of Irish explosive-expert labourers, a hidden mural and a granite gate keeper, through the voices of Ceylan Hay, Denise Riley and Lalor Roddy.
The book, beautifully designed by APFEL, is an extended enquiry into the work, featuring the full script carefully intertwined with archival materials. It sold out when first released in 2015. In collaboration with Maria Fusco, we are very happy to be releasing 60 copies on 15 October 2025, which is the tenth anniversary of the work and the sixtieth anniversary of the construction of Cruachan hydro-electric power station.
In public acknowledgment of solidarity with the Palestinian people, Maria and Book Works will donate 100% of the cover price of the book to Medical Aid for Palestinians.
