Book Works Studio Online Bookbinding Workshops

Normally, the early months of the year at the Book Works Studio are busy with in-person, one-day bookbinding courses, with groups of 6-8 university students gathered around the bench, learning basic bookbinding under the expert eye of tutor Ina Baumeister. While the Studio remains open, having students in the building hasn’t been possible this year. However, we are pleased to announce we have moved our classes online via Zoom.
As with all our courses, the aim is to give each of the students the knowledge and confidence to create the books for themselves after the day is completed. Each student receives a set of bookbinding tools and materials so that during the class they can make both a hard cover book and a soft cover notebook. We have been really pleased with how successful these workshops have been so far. One particularly lovely piece of feedback we received recently was as follows:
‘The Book Works bookbinding workshop was genuinely incredible… Was really intense and hands on… Ina was great and everyone really loved her and the process.’

Dark Room at Printed Matter’s Virtual Art Book Fair

At the 2021 Printed Matter Virtual Book Fair, Book Works presented an online event with Phyllis Christopher and Michelle Tea, moderated by Laura Guy, to introduce Dark Room: San Francisco Sex and Protest 1988-2003 – the first solo publication of Phyllis Christopher’s trailblazing photography of lesbian erotic life and political struggle. Streamed live on 25 February 2021 as part of Printed Matter’s Classroom event series, the discussion is now available to watch again.

About us
Book Works is a leading contemporary arts organisation with a unique role as makers and publishers of books.
Established in 1984, we are dedicated to supporting new work by emerging artists. Our projects are initiated by invitation, open submission, and through guest-curated projects. Book Works consists of a publishing and commissioning department; and a studio specialising in binding, box-making and multiples.
Our activities include publishing, a lecture and seminar programme, exhibitions, the development of an online archive, and artists’ surgeries and workshops held by both the publishing department and the studio.
Book Works is a National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England, and a registered charity set up to advance education in the visual arts in the form of artists’ books for the benefit of the public. We have a board of trustees who input their range of diverse expertise and interests into our development: Teresa Drace-Francis, (Chair), Season Butler, Michael Mack, and Gerrie van Noord.
