Without Reduction
‘A month ago, I was walking past a second-hand bookshop in New Haven, when I spied in the window, propped up on a bookstand right at the front, a well-thumbed copy of issue one of The Happy Hypocrite. I was chuffed to see my old friend and hoped their journey had been an eventful one. I’ve been planning to kill The Happy Hypocrite for some time now. Not because I hate it but because I love it. When I first had the idea of starting this journal I was informed and inspired by periodical publications that had concise meaningful lifespans: blazing, fizzing, whittling, whirring. HH has been publishing experimental art writing for ten years – creating against type – and during this time the field has emerged and our surrounding cultural landscape greatly changed. This issue, this final issue, invites you all to contribute. My editorial methodology is Without Reduction because I’m greedy. I want to publish as many of the open submissions I receive as I can, I want this last issue to take the temperature of current experimental art writing. Consider yourself invited.’ – Maria Fusco

The Happy Hypocrite
The Happy Hypocrite started in 2008 and was founded and edited by Maria Fusco as a semi-annual journal for and about experimental art writing. Informed by a lineage of modern experimental and avant-garde magazines, such as: Bananas, Documents, The Fox, Merlin and Tracks, The Happy Hypocrite has provided a testing ground for new writing and research-based projects, somewhere for artists, writers and theorists to express experimental ideas that might not otherwise be realised or published. It has provided a genuinely open space for artists and writers to experiment and develop in a structure that editorial support and, through its network of writers and readers, a distributed sense of community. Since issue 6, the journal has been guest edited by: Lynne Tillman, Mason Leaver-Yap, Sophia Al-Maria, Hannah Sawtell, Virginija Januškevičiūtė and Erica Scourti, each bringing new interests, concerns and further developing the genuinely international editorial approach. Book Works will be publishing this final issue – three times the size of previous ones – to mark the openness and generosity of this publishing project.

To conclude The Happy Hypocrite series, we are looking for submissions of new, previously unpublished experimental writing. We want to include as many text, image and combined image-text contributions as possible, limited only by the time frame for submissions between 10 January and 17 February and the overall 300-page extent of this expanded final issue.

To apply
Submissions are welcome from all sections of society, irrespective of nationality and residence, and especially encouraging writing by underrepresented artists/writers. We’re looking for new writing to be copyedited/proofread, rather than developed through an extensive editorial process.

Emailed submissions are accepted for both text and image work.

Please send all submissions by midnight on 17 February to happyhypocrite@bookworks.org.uk, with:

1. a completed application and equality monitoring form
2. a short CV (no more than one side A4 please)
3. Text submissions should be no more than 2,000 words, 12 point, with a double line space. Image or text/image submissions should be no more than 6 pages, 12 point, with a double line space. Images can be sent in TIFF, GIF, JPEG format. Max size per attachment is 2MB.

Due to the anticipated volume of applications, if you do not hear back from us within six weeks of the open call deadline please assume your submission will not be published.

Maria Fusco
Maria Fusco is a Belfast born interdisciplinary writer, with texts translated into ten languages. Legend of the Necessary Dreamer, Vanguard Editions (2017) has been described by Chris Kraus as ‘a new classic of female philosophical fiction’. Commissioned by National Theatre Wales, and published on vinyl by Accidental Records, her latest work ECZEMA! celebrates the seventieth anniversary of the NHS. She is a Professor at Northumbria University and previously Director of Art Writing at Goldsmiths, University of London.
