This special edition has been co-published by Book Works and Hollybush Gardens on occasion of Karl Holmqvist’s book, What’s My Name? (2009)
About the work:
Inspired by T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, Karl Holmqvist uses a writing method mainly based on quotes, which now includes a diverse range of sources, from beat and concrete poetry, to cut-up lines from films and popular songs – often quoted in their entirety. When performed live as spoken word readings by the artist, the use of reversals, word games, and not least endless repetition, reveals a liberating intent – for both writer and listener, and also for language itself, forcing an escape from the demands of linearity and constraining grammatical correctness that’s usually imposed on it.What’s My Name? contains a selection of work from the last twenty years amounting to sixty-six poems, some short artist’s texts and a few decorative doodles.
About the artist:
Karl Holmqvist is a Swedish artist known for his text based works, poetry and readings. His work involves writing, installation, video and performance, often in combination. In his eclectic practice, language works as a form of ready-made, where extensive quoting provides new, sometimes unexpected, content. Holmqvist has exhibited at the ICA – Institute of Contemporary Arts (2009); CAM – Chelsea Art Museum (2009); The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik (2008); Tensta Konsthall, Spånga (2008); Manifesta 7, Bolzano (2008); and at PERFORMA 05, New York City, NY (2005).
