About the work:
Embracing the fine tradition of the street corner prophet, tempered with the equally proud custom of keeping your mouth firmly shut, You Hear a Joke about Yourself and You Join in the Laughter (Limited Edition Print, 2004), was produced as part of Infra Thin curated by Mark Beasley, on the occasion of Mark Titchner’s book, Why and Why Not (2004).
About the artist:
Mark Titchner is an artist living and working in London. He was a 2006 Turner Prize nominee and has work held in the permanent collections of Arts Council England, The British Council, South London Gallery, the UK Government Art Collection and Tate Gallery.
Titchner is fascinated by the myriad systems of belief that permeate contemporary culture. He often revisits defunct and outmoded philosophies, especially those born out of an avant-garde idealism which has long since waned. Conflicting theories are extracted from their historical framework and submitted to us for reappraisal, reassembled as hybrid installations incorporating wall paintings, vinyl banners, light boxes and hand-carved sculptures.
